The short answer
It personalizes the questions, which is the easy half. A diagnostic finds weak areas; an adaptive engine serves harder or easier items accordingly. What neither does is change the plan when life happens — a missed week, a slipping section, a pacing problem the question-picker can't see. Personalized questions aren't a personalized program.
“Personalized” is the most-used word in test prep, so it’s worth being exact about what each product means by it.
What the software half actually does
A diagnostic locates weak areas on day one. An adaptive engine takes it from there: answer twenty questions and it calibrates the twenty-first to your level. Centers run intake diagnostics; platforms run them continuously. All of this is real and genuinely better than a static workbook.
But notice what got personalized: the next question. That’s a selection decision, and machines are good at it.
What it structurally can’t do
A program is more than a question sequence. Somebody has to notice that your student hasn’t logged in since Tuesday, that Reading pacing — not Reading knowledge — is where points leak, that the plan built in September no longer fits the calendar in October, and that motivation is the thing currently failing. The adaptive engine sees answers to questions it served. It cannot see the week your student didn’t open it, and it treats a skipped month as a pause rather than the emergency it is.
The diagnostic-only version has the same gap from the other side: a center’s intake assessment personalizes the starting plan, and then the plan meets reality — and reality needs someone watching.
The question that cuts through
Ask any provider: “When my student’s plan stops working, who changes it, and how fast?” If the answer is an algorithm, you’re buying personalized questions. If the answer is a person who noticed by Thursday, you’re buying a personalized program. They cost different amounts because they are different products.
