Andrew plays baseball, and the season runs straight through the spring ACT dates.
His 26 came from a February test, with a 23 in English and a 29 in Math. His first choice was Mississippi State, and his target was a 31 superscore for the bigger out-of-state scholarships there. A superscore takes a student’s best score in each section from different test dates, and most colleges accept it. Auburn, Clemson and Florida State were on his list too.
We built his plan with him in March, and baseball meant it had two speeds.
An hour a week, then an hour a day
During the season, Andrew didn’t have an hour a day to give the ACT. So the spring was a foundation phase of about an hour a week, mostly on English grammar, since English was where he had the most ground to make up.
When baseball ended in mid-May, he started a sprint, our name for a stretch of daily practice, about an hour a day, built around a specific test date. He worked through it with his coach, Omer. His reading comprehension was already strong, so the Reading work went into how he approached each passage.
July and September
Andrew took the ACT in July and again in September, and each test raised different sections.
In July he scored a 30 in Math and a 35 in Reading. In September he scored a 33 in English, 10 points above his February English. Together they make a 33 superscore, two points over his goal. He scored a 31 on the September test on its own.
What the 33 opens up
His 33 unlocks a potential full scholarship at Mississippi State worth $180,000. It’s a scholarship he can now compete for, and he hasn’t been awarded it yet. At a 26 in March, it wasn’t within reach.
What we did differently
- Kept the spring light during baseball season: about an hour a week, mostly on English grammar.
- Switched to about an hour a day once the season ended in mid-May.
- Worked on how he approached each Reading passage, since his comprehension was already strong.
- Used two test dates and a superscore, so each test only had to raise some of his sections.
