Mary Adelaide had already done the responsible thing. Her family hired tutors, she showed up, and she worked with them for months.
She stayed at a 24.
Months of instruction, no movement
This is the pattern we see most often, and it’s the one that makes families doubt their kid. It shouldn’t. Mary Adelaide wasn’t lazy and she wasn’t incapable — she’d been getting instruction that wasn’t pointed anywhere in particular.
Traditional tutoring tends to work through the test the way a class works through a textbook: cover the material, in order, at a reasonable pace. That approach is fine when a student’s problem is that they haven’t seen the material. It does very little when a student has seen all of it and is losing points in two specific places.
A generic approach spreads an hour evenly across a test where the points aren’t evenly distributed. Mary Adelaide was paying for time on sections she’d already locked in.
What was actually costing her the points
The diagnostic put it in one sentence: geometry fundamentals, and long word problems on math.
That’s a narrow finding, and narrowness is the point. “She needs to improve at math” is not something anyone can act on. “She’s losing points on multi-step word problems because she’s misreading what’s being asked before she starts calculating, and her geometry foundations have gaps underneath the questions she’s missing” is a plan.
Two failure modes, each with its own fix. One needed foundations rebuilt underneath it. The other was a reading-and-setup problem wearing a math costume, and it needed drilling on the setup rather than on the arithmetic.
A specialist, not a generalist
We paired her with Alina C., one of our ACT math specialists, and that pairing is most of the story.
A tutor who covers algebra, chemistry, and the ACT across a week is a generalist by necessity. A coach who works on ACT math specifically has seen the same twenty question types a few hundred times, knows which ones look hard and are easy, and can tell within a few practice sets whether a student’s problem is knowledge or setup.
Alina rebuilt Mary Adelaide’s geometry foundations and built custom drills around the long word problems. Meanwhile the sections Mary Adelaide was already good at got left almost entirely alone. That feels wrong to a lot of families — it looks like ignoring part of the test. It’s the opposite: it’s refusing to spend her hours where there were no points left to win.
Two test cycles, six points
She went 24 to 30 over about twelve weeks and two test dates.
Six points from a starting score that hadn’t moved in months of tutoring, and the difference wasn’t more hours. It was hours aimed at the two things that were actually wrong.
A few weeks after the program ended, her acceptance to the University of Georgia came through. It was her first choice.
What we did differently
- Diagnosed the score down to two specific math failure modes instead of treating Math as one weak section.
- Matched her with a coach who specializes in ACT math rather than a generalist who covers every subject.
- Spent almost no time on the sections she was already strong in, which is where her previous tutoring had been going.
